Great, if depressing, discussion, as always. It is astounding for me to realize, really realize, that the Frankfurt Marxist School view of the human condition, and American culture, has essentially replaced Christianity as the undergirding mythology of America. I think Allan Bloom's (whatever his problems) criticism of the nihilistic influence of philosophers like Herbert Marcuse (his ultimately destructive impact on liberty with his embrace of "intolerance" toward "the right") is spot on. The intolerance toward conservative and traditional notions of America has progressed much further since "Closing of the American Mind" was published in the late 1980s. At that time, I was young and mistakenly embraced many of the neo-Marxist ideologies pushed on me in the university setting. (Alt rock and punk were essentially my religion at the time.). But even then, in the late 1980s, mainstream American culture was not beset by this damaging nihilistic ideology, as it was still relegated mostly to college campuses. Now, it is everywhere, the dominant mythology of America, and the West. And we can see the result: collapse and disorder.
i dont know anything about Foucault but I've heard his influence was the turning point in the 80s...Guido Preparata discusses that 80s worm-turn in Ideology of Tyranny...reading your comment makes me wonder if this kind of Godlessness can't really last because it's so contrary to human nature...they tried in the USSR and it didn't work...as Hrvoje would say, "Thoughts?"

Foucault and Derrida (and elevation of post-modern philosophy above the traditional western cannon in general) were/was all the rage when I was at UCSD in the mid-late 1980s, though I don't think many students deeply read, or understood, the potential damaging long-term cultural impacts of such philosophers. In the Reagan Era, I believe traditional American hegemony seemed overwhelming and eternal, especially to those on the "far left" and such philosophies were a way to protest the excesses of such hegemony, but absent any deep contemplation of long-term impacts. For me, a relatively poor, angry, fatherless lower middle class kid (with slightly conservative leanings of which I was deeply ashamed due to the lack of support in my own family) amongst a sea of wealthy children of elites in the UC system (I look back and realize I was completely out of place), it would have been difficult to see the entire neo-Marxist/postmodern thing as anything beyond a rebellion against "the man" (a continuation of the Marcuse-inspired 1960s contra Reagan and military-industrial complex) and the bland excesses of the Baby Boomer consumerist Yuppie Reagan Era. Many of the children of the wealthy elites at UCSD no doubt saw it that way too, I'm sure. However, they also had an (seeming) economic and familial support system that allowed them to play with such ideas without real consequence in their lives. As to such a nihilistic philosophy not working long-term, I myself am feeling increasingly Christian Apocalyptic (like Hvorje, I think) and economically Apocalyptic (like Mike and Hvorje and you, I think), as if everything being done is a long-term engineered chaos with an engineered collapse endgame.
Regarding the "1984" v "Brave New World" argument, I still see "Demolition Man" - everything is ultra-clean and everyone is terminally happy by law. The government is a small circle of elites that dress in clerical robes and the leader wears a mitre. Another pop culture reference would be the 7th season of "Charmed", where the witches fight a group called "the Acolytes" who promise to bring about a world without any strife at all.
To me, if we were to live in a world without any pain or evil at all, the Lord's Prayer would be rendered useless. In the words of Jesus, we are to pray to be DELIVERED FROM evil, not for the total extermination of evil. No matter how wonderful things may seem - Brave New World, Demolition Man world, "Acolytes" world - evil exists and in fact is even more powerful there as it is hidden in everything one sees, touches, tastes, hears and smells. We can't pray for delivery from the evil that we do not perceive.
